Do I Stay Christian?: A Guide for the Doubters, the Disappointed, and the Disillusioned

Do I Stay Christian? Book Cover

Over some past months we have had numerous great opportunities to get to know both the church property and the congregation from a variety of angles through the “Becoming WACC” series that the Church Life & Growth Committee has hosted. We’ve even met the trees on the church grounds!

This Autumn there will be an opportunity to get to know Church (with a big “C”) history a little better and how that impacts us today in our church (with a little “c.”) Washington Avenue is one small congregation within the larger body of the global Church. We are most impacted by what has happened, and is happening, within the American church. The decline in American church attendance and identity is well known to us, but do we really understand the complex reasons behind these shifts?

Pastor-turned-author Brian McLaren has written a useful book for considering the state of Christianity, especially the American church, and how that influences our faith and witness. The book is titled, Do I Stay Christian? A Guide for the Doubters, the Disappointed & the Disillusioned, and we are offering a book study/discussion series using this book as a guide. The book focuses on interactions between Christianity and the prevailing culture, not on issues within specific congregations or denominations. This is a “big picture” look at the Church, and it’s really quite enlightening!

The sessions will run four consecutive Monday evenings (September 11, 18, 25 and October 2) from 7-8:30pm in the Fellowship Hall.

The book Do I Stay Christian? A Guide for the Doubters, the Disappointed & the Disillusioned is available for purchase online or can be ordered from a local bookstore. The Clevnet Library system (which includes Elyria) has access to 16 copies. If you need the church to obtain a copy of the book on your behalf, let us know. We hope you’ll consider joining in the series as we consider the role of WACC in this conversation at this time and in this place. What might we keep in mind as we continue Becoming WACC?
