Creating a Legacy: Susan & Mark Mathes

Dear Friends,

We found Washington Avenue Christian Church after finding each other and decided to make Elyria and WACC our homes ever since. Life has brought us together in ways that have been satisfying and fulfilling. With Elyria and Lorain County, we discovered a community rich in history, diversity, culture, natural beauty, and substance. Oh yes, there have been many challenges that the community at large has faced but there were and are enough positives to offset those challenges.

With WACC, we discovered a faith community with long-standing roots in the local community, our state, our country, and our world. We found a church community that welcomed all in the name of Christ. We were invited to be part of the community and to be part of shaping it as we all move into the future. Washington Avenue remembered and honored the past but was not confined and limited by the past as it responded to needs in both the church and local communities. Like Elyria, our church has faced challenges and we as a church have responded in ways that bring glory to Christ and his message of grace and inclusion for all.

Washington Avenue has a storied history and willingness to respond to new challenges and changes and it has been an important part of our life. Because of the faithfulness of our church, we have made provisions in our estate plans to support the work and mission of WACC in perpetuity through an estate fund with the Christian Church Foundation. This fund will make annual distributions to WACC after we’re gone to aid it in fulfilling its mission From Our Doorsteps to the Ends of the Earth.

We are most blessed at WACC to have a multi-decade relationship with the Christian Church Foundation. If you are curious how you, too, can create a legacy that will live in perpetuity, please contact the church office or the Rev. Matt Rosine, Great Lakes Region Vice President for the Christian Church Foundation. Through the gifts of saints, both past and present, our church will continue what it does best: sharing the very best, most beautiful, gospel-good news of Jesus Christ.

Blessings and Peace,

Susan and Mark Mathes
