A Word from Pastor Nathan

Dear Friends:

We have a fantastic cohort of lay persons who serve as Board and staff members. Our group of leaders ask imaginative questions that often begin with, “What if…?” This question opens us to discern myriad possibilities instead of trying to find the single and elusive “right” answer, which is limiting and myopic. Another gift of the whole church is that we are not afraid to try new things. You have continually proven this attribute to me in our brief time together. I brag on WACC constantly to friends and colleagues. You are unique. Leading with you in mission and ministry is a labor of love.

With the joint vision of our Elders and Board, we are going to try something new for the summer. Beginning on Sunday, June 16, and concluding Sunday, September 1, we will have one weekly worship service at 9:30 a.m. Here are a few goals the church leadership are anticipating through a joy-filled summer of worship:

  • Encourage fellowship of the whole church as one church.
  • Plan unique learning and social activities on selected Sundays for the whole church.
  • Steward the use of congregational resources toward one service.
  • Provide a convenient time and that allows for persons to maximize the use of their day.

As a congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), our best asset is not the pastor or the building; rather, you—the people of Washington Avenue Christian Church—comprise the fabric of who we are. You make our mission and ministry possible. With Jesus as our pattern, we are a transformed and transforming church, always seeking to be witnesses to God ’s reconciling love and justice.

We have an exciting summer ahead of us, and I count on seeing you on Sunday mornings. As always, it ’s the highlight of my week to share in worship with you. Your faithfulness in attendance, stewardship, and commitment tells a story of God ’s activity from our doorsteps to the ends of the earth. Well done, church, and thanks be to God.

Peace abundant,

Nathan
