A Word from Pastor Nathan

Recently, someone asked my favorite moments of worship. The most worshipful times for me are the doxology and communion, especially the prayer at the table written and delivered by one of our elders. I’m always surprised by how the elders weave together themes from the biblical text and also improvise, guided by the spirit of the risen Christ.

Barbara Terrell’s family presented her WACC file to me, which included numerous hand-written prayers that Barbara, a multi-term elder and elder-for-life, gave at our communion table. I’ve been reading her prayers and this one, in particular, resonated with me.

Among the worst consequences of death is separation. I’m sure Jesus’ disciples felt that emotion, and we feel it, too. However, as a people who believe in and practice the communion of saints, we remember how Jesus made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread. When we do this, we ask that God give us eyes of faith that we may recognize Jesus’ living presence with us. As a result, we are inspired to join in the transforming work of God’s justice and joy, peace and shalom from our doorsteps to the ends of the earth.

Thanks be to God!
