A Word from Pastor Nathan

Dear Friends:

One of the characteristics that drew me to Washington Avenue Christian Church was the legacy of strong, committed lay leadership. Here ’s one example: Though we ’ve had many years of Consecration Days in years past, none of us had ever prepared a “virtual” consecration season. Second, the Stewardship Committee had never determined a budget over Zoom. Finally, the Board had never reviewed a budget in an online meeting. But, with God’s help, we did all of these things!

In addition to the challenges that COVID-19 has brought to the fore, we also have had attrition within our congregation due to death and people moving. All of these factors contributed to a different financial projection for 2021. In spite of these factors, the church leadership rose to the occasion. We proved to ourselves that we can make difficult decisions, name the grief we feel, lean into the future with hope, and trust unreservedly in the faithfulness of God.

Another opportunity opens on Thursday, January 7, 2021. We will launch an online voting portal for church members to approve the budget for the year. Part of this portal will include a video presentation from Board Chair Mark Mathes and Treasurer Dan Walker about the proposed budget. Members can cast their vote, make a comment, or ask a question. For members not online, a copy of the budget along with a ballot will be mailed to you. Anyone may request a paper ballot by contacting the church office. All votes must be received by January 14.

A budget is mission-critical to any congregation, and yet, the budget is not what determines our ministry. Instead, the budget is a vehicle that fuels our endeavors. Even in spite of this pandemic, the invitation to join God in this gospel -effort is exhilarating and exciting.

None of this work is possible without your participation and commitment. Your presence with God and with our church during this time empowers us to be and to share the very best, most beautiful gospel -good news from our doorsteps to the ends of the earth. Truly, I cannot wait to see how God will achieve God’s purposes in and through us. With the breath of God’s Spirit and your discipleship, we will, yet again, fulfill the words of the Rev. Dr. Henry Shaw, former pastor of Washington Avenue, “When faith is strong, great victories can be won. ”

Peace abundant,
